Particularly like Medeski, Martin and Wood, X-ray Spex and Iron man – Ben may be right – I think it is better than Sabbath’s! Just been zoning out to Neu, my work rate has increased during the playing of that tune, that motorik groove yields results, those efficient Germans!
ReplyDeleteLoved the compilation Em! Starting off with that joyful tune from Ghost World, love the combo of brass and surf guitar! I agree - that IS better than Sabbath's Iron Man! Warrior in Woolworths is fab, I really didn't know what to expect of X-Ray Spex and was very pleasantly surprised; I particularly like the heavy, yet pretty sound. I must confess to not knowing Joy Division that well, but I loved Sumner's amazing heavy guitar playing on this track.
ReplyDeleteNever heard Hey Mr Rain before either - very Emma-like string drones! I loved how the guitar, bass and drums build and then slow and build again.... Great drumming! China Gate and Nightmare are dripping with film noir seduction! I recall these two fondly from late night spotify sessions together! Artie Shaw's sleazy clarinets are fabulous (I never achieved sleaze-sounds on my clarinet, it's hard to do!) and the song sizzles.
Loved what I thought sounded like saw playing on the fab Tom Waits tune and Let's Go Everywhere is delightful! In the words of Ren and Stimpy - Happy Happy Joy Joy!
Ah, thank you kindly. I must say, the X-Ray Spex track is quite atypical of their stuff, but it's an irresistibly bouncy tune.
ReplyDeleteAnd Hey Mr Rain is an oft-overlooked gem of a VU track ...
